A while back I posted a question to this forum about upgrading from (2) D2xs to the D3s. Universally, I was told to go for it and for a while had come to that decision. But I've changed my mind. I shot seiously from the mid-sixties to the early nineties and then took a decade hiatus. After I eased back in, the world had gone digital, and I love it. The ease and creative possibilities of digital are all but astounding to anyone who remembers back in the day. However, the way cameras are made and marketed has changed paradigmatically. Where a topline camera was once an investment of many years, they now change them about like I change shirts. So I wondered just when and how often do you jump onto this evolution merry-go-round? Once it dawned on me that today's cameras are just a lens hooked to a computer, I began to get a handle on it. I own a business, and we own a number of desktop computers. When we buy them, we always get that absolute up-to-the-minute technology - the best there is. Then we use them until they seriously break or just get old and doggy, which they seem to do in four or five years. Then we replace them with the absolute latest computers of that moment and use them until they no longer effectivley serve. Typically, they're obsolete before the first donut crumb settles on the keyboard, and many successive editions come along while they go through their useful life, but we don't run out each time and invest in it. I don't expect many of the subscribers to this forum will agree, but I've concluded that this same approach is the most appropriate one for cameras, and my plan is to use what I've got until it's a whole lot more outdated than it is today, then sell it or scrap it and get that moment's newest and latest and start the process all over again. Whether you can afford it or not isn't the issue for me, but rather, why keep throwing money at something you can catch but will never hold onto?
