I hope that some folks can offer assistance with my situation. Here is some background.

I purchased a D300 along with the 16-85mm lens in April, after many years of shooting film with an FE-2. It was my first venture into digital photography, and I am enjoying it immensely.

I have since purchased the 85 f/1.4, 24-70, and ZF 100, and these are in addition to the MF AI-S lenses I still have from film days: 24 f/2.8, 55 f/2.8 micro, 105 f/2.5, and 80-200 f/4. All of these work well with the D300, but I wanted more high ISO quality for available-light shooting situations, especially indoors.

My problem is that I very much enjoy cropping most of my photos in camera, and the FX angle-of-view and lack of close focusing ability of the 85mm leaves much to be desired in terms of portraits. I find that I am having to crop almost all of them in post-processing. Also, manual focusing with the ZF 100 is quite difficult, compared to using the Katz Eye split-ring focusing screen in my D300.

However, using aperture mode with Auto ISO set to 1/125 and 12800 is amazing. I almost never have to even think about the amount of light.

I have two more days to decide whether to keep the D3s or return it for a refund. Obviously it is much bulkier and heavier than the D300, and I have not yet noticed any particular advantages with the built-in battery holder/grip and vertical shutter release.

Since I had some deep cuts on my fingers during this time, I could not test the D3s in the way I would have liked, so I cannot say much about the difference in IQ compared with the D300. But as I said, the low light capabilities are awesome.

So I have been in a deep quandary for the past week, with much teeth-gnashing and hair-pulling in terms of what to do, and at this point am looking for opinions and feedback.

Many thanks!
