D3s raw (NEF) in Photoshop CS4
I am confused. I have a D3s, using View NX, NX2, Photoshop CS4, Lightroom and Bridge. I can only open NEF files in View NX and NX2.
I have all the latest updates including Camera Raw 5.5 in CS4.
Do all NEF files have to be converted to TIFF before manipulating the image? Do I have to wait for Adobe to update Camera Raw to except D3s
raw files? Even though the 5.5 version excepts D3 NEF files.

Most programs that edit RAw or NEF images check the camera manufacture and model before processing the image. This check is made to make sure the program has been updated for any new features introduced that could affect the images settings.
You must have updated your Nikon ViewNX and Nikon Capture NX2 which recently added the D3s. Adobe Lab's has a pre-public release, ACR 5.6 that adds support for the Nikon D3s. Note that this is not the final public version and may have some minor issues that will need to be addressed before the final version is released. You are free to download and install it for your evaluation. If you do this, you should then download the public release when it becomes available.
The delay of programs to process RAW images for new cameras is not rare. Nikon had a recent release where the software was not updated for the new NEF format for several months, because Nikon announced the camera's release date and then found problems with their software and the software release was delayed.
There is a program, RawTherapee that does not check this data, but you are expected to know and report that your camera's image is not being processed properly. I prefer my computer programs to have some level of acceptance processing and error detection. I think this approach is right up there with running a payroll program 3 times or more times and taking the run that has the same answer the majority of the time, irregardless if the detail was processed correctly, the employee will know if his/her netpay is correct.

I am glad that helped all.
I forgot to mention you can also use the Adobe DNG Converter program, free from Adobe, to convert RAW images to Adobe's public DNG archival format. Note the public format means the file format documentation is public and there is an SDK for programmers, but there is no international committee controlling the format like the Jpeg or Tiff formats.
With Nikon ViewNX and Nikon Capture NX2 you can save images either as Tiff or Jpeg, but if you do the direct transfer from ViewNX or NX2 the program used the Tiff format. The advantage of opening the NEF images in ViewNX or NX2 is that the in camera image settings will be applied to the image before transfer. PhotoShop CS4 and other editors usually do not apply the in camera settings. I believe this is because of the amount of coding needed for each camera model and Nikon/nik Software only has to deal with the new Nikon models.
