Ok I am really struggling with NAS right now. I have 5k to drop if I want to on a D3. Here is my struggle, I just printed on a HP Z6100 60" wide format inkjet (one at work) of one of my humming bird shots. I was a cropped NEF converted to a jpeg and printed. The finished print size is 40"x52" from a 4mp image. The quality is just stunning, why do I need the D3???

Your shots seem very nice but nobody can crop a four megapixel shot like a twelve megapixel shot and your keeper rate would probably go up drastically with a much better AF engine. Your getting great results but the D3 would do it that much more easily.

Having both a D2H and D2X, you can certainly tell the difference between 12MP and 4MP files in prints as little as 13x19. I have had prints of identical shots taken with both cameras side by side and even non-photographers can immediately tell the difference between the two. It is up to you to decide how much quality you want in your prints.
you'll love the D3. compared to the d2hs which has 4mp in DX. the D3 cropped to DX size is 5mp. So your only getting a little more pixel density, it's really the ability to shoot in FX mode and the other improvements that make the camera worth getting imo.
