I can see why the Nikon marketing department chose to depict the D3 with the 85 f/1.4. Ergonomically, it balances awesome; photographically speaking -- wow. The pictures are truly great. I had previously owned the 85 1.8, but on a DX body. I really like this lens on the D3.
Good stuff! I used to have 1.8 on my film cameras. Switched to 1.4 and it quickly became one of my favorite lenses. I can't wait to put it on my new D3 which I've been waiting for patiently! ... well try to be patient here.
Yes, wide open at f/1.4 but placing the D3's focus point right on the eye. Closing down would have given a cleaner image but I wanted the eyes to be strong and the rest of the face blurring to out of focus.
I got my first opportunity to use this combo properly on New Years Eve, left it on 6400 all the time, got great results. Found that auto-white-balance does tend to make the images far too warm. Next time, I'll wind it right down. I'll be giving the 70 -200 a run out this coming weekend for candid shots in a large, dimly lit room. Should be interesting, given the VR. Here's a sample from NYE, slightly cropped.
