I have a stone in my shoe and I thought some of you can give me some of your thoughts.

I am still wondering why Nikon made the D3 with a FF/FX sensor. It has been stated that Nikon designed this camera for the PJ & Sportsshooter. An advantage of the DX sensor was on the long end. I know a lot of us have enjoyed getting away with shorter lenses in shooting situations. Now when it comes to shooting sports, my 200-400/4 was a great sideline camera for me. On a D3, it is not as great and the end result will be to perhaps get a 600/4. I would think that many sports shooters would have the prediciment. The same goes for the wildlife shooter who could perhaps get by carrying the 200-400/4 instead of lugging around 600/4.

At one time it was speculated that Nikon would have a 18+ MP camera with perhaps a 10 MP DX mode that would fire at obscene frame rates. Now this type of camera would be appealing to me because I would still have a great sports camera that I can shoot in DX mode but then have a camera for higher resolution stuff but alas, this wonder camera never materialized.

Could Nikon not come up with a great noise solution for a 12 MP DX high action camera? Was the FX sensor needed for this?

Sure, the FX camera brings back the fast wide angle FOV using lenses such as the 17-35/2.8 that we were missing for a number of years with a DX sensor but for the intended users of this camera, is a fast wide-angle really needed?

I do not want to get into all the ways the D3 can be used. We all know it can be used for a great deal of different shooting circumstances just like the D2H could be used when it first came out. I would like to confine the thoughts to the people that Nikon says this camera was designed for with presumably a higher MP but lower performance camera coming in the future.

I guess the bottom line is that while the D3 appears to be a GREAT camera and I will get one, but I am not too thrilled with the FX sensor when it comes to shooting in situations that this camera was supposively designed for. I rather see it have a DX sensor on this performance camera and have perhaps an FX sensor on the lower performanced, higher MP camera that will no doubt come.

This has all come to mind as I prepare to shoot a small college bowl game this weekend. I will have to take note of what focal lengths I do actually use when shooting it with my 200-400/4.

Any thoughts?
