Help me out here. F vs FX vs DX

I've seen a few comments about "upgrading my future lenses to FX" here and I confess I'm confused. Isn't "FX" the same thing as "F"? We're talking about the F-mount here, right? Just that the D3 is called "FX" because it will "adapt" to DX-format lenses as well, right? So shouldn't people really be talking about buying "F" vs "DX" lenses and not upgrading to some "FX" mount? Or is there a third option of which I'm unaware. Gotta admit I only found out about the D3 a week ago
