I had the chance to try out the VR at a local camera shop the other day. I was a bit surprised and disappointed. I am used to more "meaty" Nikkor lenses. This one seemed very fragile. When it zooms, its "turtle neck" sticks out. What if it is drizzling? It seems dust and rain would go right into the cavity created when the lens zooms out. It also does not seem like the old hunks of iron that I have come to expect from Nikkor lenses.

By the time I caugh up the California sales tax, the lens will cost me $1,660. (Maybe I will get one from B&H instead.)

Are these lenses known to be reliable? Are they durable? I can't help thinking that it seemed flimsy. What has been your experience using them?
