D3 Alternative: New Nikon FX Digi Rangefinder??
Read an interesting blog post about somebody supposedly "in the know" who says Nikon are bringing out a cheaper FX model but rather than being an SLR as expected it will be in a rangefinder to compete with the Leica M8.

I find this hard to beleive that they wouldnt bring out a D400 FX or something like that for semi-pro/pro-ams who want the FX but dont need the speed (and cost) of the D3...

The first red flag is "AF uses contrast detection off the sensor." This would make for extremely slow focus detection, as contrast detection alone doesn't permit the camera to determine the direction necessary to correct focus.
The next hint concerns the lens mount. I doubt very much that Nikon has any interest in introducing a new line of lenses at all, let alone for a single camera. Finally, there's the price. Given that a Nikon F6 sells for $2000, I doubt Nikon can save $2000 by making a rangefinder, even if they were to contract the whole thing out to Cosina.
There are other bits, such as taking the rangefinder image off of the sensor. All this comes from a friend "in the know" who "doesn't follow photography."
So in summary, I find this rumor one of the least likely one's I've seen.
