Shooting some lions over the weekend with a D2Hs and 17-35mm AFS and in one series of shots (low speed 3FPS setting), in Capture 4.4.2 I've lost the focus point. The frames before show it, the frames after show it. Just not the one I was looking at. Under the menu it's greyed out and the shortcut keystroke doesn't work either. Has this happened to anyone else ?
Okay.....if I am reading you right, you have not lost your focus point but it is more of a case that you can not view itin Capture at times.
To answer your question...yes it has happen to me. I have seen this problem a couple of times over the years. It never happened enough for me to bother looking into it more closely so I cannot tell you the cause or fix for this.
Nope, it was a series of 3 or 4 shots in sequence. It was because I liked the one in the middle I wanted to see the focus point and it wasn't there. Looked at the before and after shots and it was where I expected it to be. It's probably a glitch in their firmware. Looking at other sequence shots, they all have focus points displayed in NC4.4.2 Might try and load up the NX demo to see what it says.
This is normal if you are shooting a high-speed sequence and predictive focus tracking is on-- not all frames will have focus "locked" on a sensor. In these images, no focus point shows up (because technically the camera didn't have a 'lock'.
You will see the same thing in the camera LCD if you enable the focus area screen while doing image review. Some frames in a sequence will have a red indicator in the pattern, while others might have a plain white pattern with no red indicator.

Hi Jason, I was in low speed mode (3FPS), predictive was off (I think). I also have the 'focus to take a shot' option set (for both single and continous AF) so it shouldn't be able to take a shot without an AF lock I would have thought. I should point out the image was in focus, it was the menu option that was greyed out got me looking into it more.
