This was clipped from the Cafe forum. Keep in mind, I am a happy D2x owner for the most part, w/ the caveats mentioned below. What are the drawbacks of the MKIII? Read on....

Thanks for that. Now if there is a persuasive argument for a D2x user switchnig to Canon, this may be it:

- Closer to full frame at 1.3x
- ISO range 50-6400 (custom sets)
- very low noise at high ISO
- 10 fps for 110 JPGs or 30 RAW w/o further cropping
- 1/300 flash sych
- CF and SD storage - not necessarily a sticking point, but not bad

I have a D2x, and I do love it, but the noise levels at 800 or greater, render images all but unuseable (I can spend time in post with different software/techniques, but that's not the part of photography I love at all). To get 8fps w/o that annoying insert, it's tricky getting subjects in frame. Color and noise at ISO 100 is outstanding, but 50 would be nice. Yada yada yada. My main "complaint" is the noise - for the money, the D2x is a _very_ noisy camera.

With all the talk of the "D3x" (or whatever Nikon's next move is) being FF, shouldn't the discussion be in regards to sensor noise, not size? I must qualify the following statement by saying that I am not an engineer and have only a very, very rudimentary understanding of the difference between CMOS and CCD. But if Canon can develop and manufacture a very low noise, high resolution CMOS sensor, do you think Nikon might ought to re-think the Sony sensor idea?

I guess what I'm getting at is that I hope Nikon is planning to address high ISO noise. I happen to like the DX sensor philosophy - I really don't mind the crop factor. I would gladly continue the crop factor w/ a low-noise sensor. Seriously, for $4500 are you getting the most versatile camera - from an image standpoint not a custom settings standpoint - that you can possibly get? What do you think? Not a flame, as I am a Nikonian through and through, but the MKIII got me to thinking...
