Locking Shutter/Aperature?

One of the first things I noticed on my new D2Xs was the "L" button on the top left side. I actually had to look this up in the manual (OH NO!).

Why would someone need to actually lock their shutter speed/aperature? Since it only works in non-P modes you are dialing in the desired value anyway. Why would you need to lock it?
