The wait is for the RAW converter software to be updtaed. Besides Apple must upgrade the OS if they make an adjustment to the RAW file structure....which they did because the new Capture 4.4.2 for PC has been updated to work with that. Also NX probably needs and update as well, so maybe they are working on that...doesnt make sense to upgrade a camera if no software can convert the RAW images...
... at least it never has in the past, but with the new "Image Authentication", what are the chances that a new tag/field has been added to the meta-data that will cause the 'old' NEF converters to be off by a few bytes?
The way TIFF works (yes, the underlying file format of NEF files is TIFF), it shouldn't matter if things moved around a bit in the file.
The problem some RAW converters have had with newer bodies is that they don't recognize the model number and thus don't know how to interpret the image and metadata. I don't anticipate that will be a problem with the firmware upgrade.
The firmware upgrade adds new in-camera settings, such as B&W, that will no doubt be included in the NEF file. To honor all of the in-camera settings, Capture will have to know about them and process correctly based on those settings. I imagine that's what the Capture update is all about. It may well be, however, that an older Capture -- and third-party RAW converters -- will happily process NEFs from the updated camera if those new settings aren't used.
My Nikon message center said Capture 4.4.2 is available for the Mac today....in its details it says support for D2HS and D2X RAW files with version 2.0 upgrade....I bet we get the upgrade tomorrow...now that there is software out that can convert it....I wonder if there will be an NX update? Or did the last update take care of that compatibility.
My local authorized Nikon dealar said today that 2 repairs coming back on D2X units the past week had the new firmware. I wish we could clone one camera to another. I'm guessing October is the month(?)
Discussion Thread Response (Melanie Stanton) 02/10/2006 09:39 AM Dear Stephen, We would recommend using Nikon Capture 4.4.2, if you aren't already, but other than this your exisiting software should be ok. Kind Regards,
Customer (Stephen Lamb) 29/09/2006 11:06 AM When this happens will I need to upgrade my software for displaying the NEFs or JPEGs?
Got it, thanks a bunch!! I have been checking the NikonUSA site quite regularly, but never had any luck.
* I like the new menu colors!
* It still doesn't call it ISO 1000, just H0.3, H0.7
* B&W only available in sRGB (I will never use this anyway, so what am I complaining about?). It is 'different' to look at B&W pictures on the LCD
* Maximum shots 60? I thought it was only going up to 45 -- maybe I was drinking that day? Still only holds 17 NEF's???
* Firmware upgrade reset my image counter
* CS2/Bridge has no issues with Image Authentication
* When shooting NEF in sRGB/B&W, the image preview comes up B&W, but when you open the image in CS2, it is full color. There is nothing wrong here, just an observation -- the embedded jpg in the NEF is indeed stored in sRGB/B&W if so chosen.
This is REALLY strange. After installing the firmware, I took a few shots and the numbering started from '1'. Later, I formatted my card, and the camera returned to shooting at the last recorded image+1 -- 5806. Weird, but I won't complain!
Just updated and noticed that they didn't really address something that was done on the D70 at one point. The capacity calc is still way off. It doesn't appear that it takes RAW Compression into account. Being that I can get about 400 Raw-Compressed shots on a 4GB card, I'd expect the counter to be over 194..... No biggie, just gotta complain about something

Yes, but compressed RAW should be about half-size of uncompressed (or some other fraction)... therefore, you should see a higher number for 'Images Remaining' in compressed NEF vs. uncompressed NEF... I see the same value (198) for both.
This was a bug on the D70 intially (only shoots compressed NEF, but was calculating based on uncompressed NEF). The D70 firmware upgrade fixed this.
Just updated my X's. Updates only took about 30 seconds each instead of 2-3 minutes as stated. By the way, I noticed the misspelled warning words "canmera" - gonna have to go through all menus and see if any other typos are present.
