OK, let's start guessing what D2Xs features will be back-fittable into the D2X. The incremental improvements are nice, and I bet we get many of them through a firmware update.

I'm guessing firmware updates will give us:
+ configurable delay for lock-on focus tracking
+ improved AF algorithms
+ minimum shutter speed/maximum ISO for Auto ISO mode
+ shooting data overlay with AF/VR info
+ FUNC button separate functions with and without command dial
+ sensor cleaning mode without AC adapter
+ settings save/restore
Also looks like the insane EN-EL4a will be compatible with all D2's.

Looks like we won't get the Hi-Speed Crop viewfinder mask, black & white, or the increased buffer depth.

Not sure about:
+ cropped metering for Hi-Speed Crop mode
+ ISO HI-0.3, HI-0.5, HI-0.7
+ long exposure NR's affect on burst depth
+ in-camera trimming
+ image authentication

Any other guesses? Or anyone got actual information on what the corresponding D2X firmware update will deliver?

My guess is that something like image authentication and in-camera trimming won't be available via firmware. Anything that is hardware-related obviously won't be offered.

I don't see why we couldn't get B&W mode, though. That might just be possible.
Cropped metering would be very nice to have, and seems possible-- telling the camera to ignore certain metering zones *shouldn't* be to hard. Of course, this begs the question as to why it wasn't there in the first place.

    Just curious...

Why would Nikon make any firmware upgrades for the D2X?

Wouldn't it be better "for them" to keep those upgrades for the D2Xs only, to encourage sales?

Looks like the fall of '06 for the update, and not just the D2x

This is the full text of the OFFICIAL NIKON TECH BULLETIN available via NPS website re: the upcoming D2X firmware upgrade:

    Firmware announcement for D2X, D2Hs and D200.

    Question

    Answer

    1. Do you plan to offer a firmware update for D2-series cameras that will enable those cameras with functions adopted for the D2XS? If so, when?

We plan to offer a firmware update for the D2X and D2HS in the fall of 2006.
We do not plan to offer a firmware update for the D2H.
    2. What will change with the scheduled D2X and D2Hs firmware updates?

Primarily, a number of features will be added or modified as described below.

    o H 0.3 (ISO 1000 equivalent), H 0.5 (ISO 1100 equivalent), and H 0.7 (ISO 1250 equivalent) options will be added between the ISO 800 and HI-1 sensitivity settings (D2X only).

o Autofocus subject acquisition and tracking capability will be improved.

o A "Black-and-white (sRGB)" option will be added to the "Color mode" settings in the shooting menu (D2X only).

o An "Image authentication" item will be added to the setup menu. However, the optional Image Authentication Software is required to verify image authenticity.

o A "Trim" item will be added to the shooting menu (D2X only).

o The "Custom" option in the shooting menu's "Tone compensation" item will be modified so that up to 3 user-defined curves can be downloaded to the camera.

o An upgrade of Nikon Capture 4 Camera Control is scheduled to support download of 3 curves to the camera. The optional Camera Control Pro software can also be used to download curves to the camera.

o A "Save/load settings" item will be added to the setup menu.

o The "Mirror lock-up" item in the setup menu will be modified so that the mirror can be locked in the up position under battery power as well as AC adapter power.

o The number of options available for the "Lock-on" item in the Custom Settings menu will be increased to 4: "Long", "Normal", "Short", and "Off".

o "Max. sensitivity" and "Min. shutter speed" options will be added to the "ISO auto" item in the Custom Settings menu.

o The "Maximum shots (Max No. of shots taken in continuous shooting)" item in the Custom Settings menu will be modified to allow a maximum setting of 60 shots.

o The "FUNC. button" in the Custom Settings menu will be divided into two items: "FUNC. button press" and "FUNC. button + command dials" (D2X only).

o A "Recent settings" item will be added to the setup menu.
    3. Are there any other cameras, besides the D2XS, with which the Image Authentication Software is compatible?

Yes. We plan to provide compatibility with an additional 3 models, the D2X, D2HS, and D200, via firmware updates for those cameras.
    4. What will change with the scheduled D200 firmware update?

Primarily, features will be added or modified as described below.

o An "Image authentication" item will be added to the setup menu.

o Support for the optional Wireless Transmitter WT-3 will be added.

As you can see - B&W will be available - Focus will be improved - and max shots continuous will increase from 35 to 60 - same as D2Xs. As per NIKON.
