sb50dx doesn't work with built in speedlight
I'll bet Darrell has tried this.... using the sb50dx, raise the built in d100 speedlight, bounce the 50 off the ceiling... do both fire?
I can't make it work. Only the built-in will fire. Bounces by itself just fine. Works on the N80. I can get it to fire both by setting the flash to M, but that's it.
Could someone who owns both (d100, sb50) give it a try?

I tested mine in the same way and was surprised to find that the SB-50DX flash will not fire with the little on-camera speedlight up, unless you are in manual. I think I read somewhere in the users guide about a way to make them both fire together, cause I remember the guide number being higher with both. I'll do some research on this intriguing bit of info. In the meantime, I went to Nikon-Euro's site and found this little tidbit. It is just as you described:
Using built-in Speedlight and an optional Speedlight
If the built-in Speedlight is used when an optional Speedlight other than the SB-50DX is attached, the optional Speedlight will not fire. Only when an SB-50DX is set to manual in the bounce flash position will both the built-in Speedlight and the SB-50DX fire.

Thanks. I know you have the same equipment. This is a bummer. It seems that Nikon has really tripped themselves in the digital/TTL flash department.
I read some other complaints about the microflashes fouling the slave function, too.
The bounce is sufficient, but this is a disappointment.
