I am about to take an extended trip/vacation and have been looking into getting a digital wallet. Since they are basically hard disks (and thus, have moving parts), they may be subject to failures.
My question: has anyone experienced any failures in the field (other than "dropping" one)? If you did experience a failure, how easy/difficult was it to recover your data?
The digital wallet seems like an inexpensive way to store photos and I am trying to avoid buying more CF cards.
Thanks for your help.

One thing notice during uploading a CF card to the digital wallet. The wallet gets a light tap it will abort the upload. Learned to just set the wallet down and not move it while uploading.
Something else related to slight movement during the upload. While it may not abort the entire upload, some pictures become corrupted. Again solution is leave it happy and un touched while it uploads.
Compared to laptops still working even under heavy movement. These things sure are tempermental. Speaking of laptops, that is type of Hard drive in the digital wallet. Not as robust as full sized DeskTop HHDs. Still the digital wallet would put much less demand then a laptop would on it. Haven't had HDD crash-n-burn in a digital wallet
Classic HDD errors of Partition or Boot sector failures. Data recovery programs can retreive lost data, even after format wiped everything out. Haven't had the pleasure to do this yet tho.
Keep eye out for last years model at big savings. Like computer technology latest great costs a premium but hardware came before are priced to sell.

I purchased a Mindstor 1810 (10Gig). It was never dropped, touched or bumped while transferring. It had many issues downloading from CF to the HD, constant drive not ready errors. From the HD to the PC, it would constantly shutdown or reboot during transfers. I called Mindstor. Their techs leave alot to be desired (they read straight from the manual). They tell you to upload the "latest" drivers over the internet, but the links don't work.
Long story short... I got my pics out myself using old drivers and sent it back for a refund. It cost me shipping both ways.
IMHO, look for any other brand.

I don't doubt your experience, but I've had the same Mindstor for about three months. I've up/downloaded over 10,000 images and haven't had any problems.
I will add that I've always been very careful about keeping it still during transfers.
Too bad you had such a bad experience with yours. Sounds like you got a bad one from the factory.

Stopping when bumped happens on the one we use sometimes as well. It seems to be related to the battery connector. I was thinking about replacing it anyway to make it easier for me to charge from my R/C airplane charger.
