My stuff is for a hobby. However, I don't say no when people want to give me money for images, and I actually seek a few real estate jobs. We'll starve if I have to feed the family on the proceeds from photography, but the few jobs do pay for some of the NAS...

I think Pro or Hoppy are not determine with who have the studio business or not - this is how good your photos you took, and how you know to control and familiar with your camera (D2X)- doesn't matter what camera you get, it is matter what you see in the viewfinder
It seems that the number of votes for hobby outweight the ones for pro. Though I am pretty sure there are LOTS of professionals using the D2x, I am quite relieved to see that it is equaly used for pure hobby purposes.
Now I feel more confident to invest 5k on a camera that will not give me any return but pleasure of holding the top equipments and getting the best pictures!
edited to add: obvisouly a potential best picture, the rest is up to my skills...
Funny you say that because it's exactly how I feel. Been shooting SLR's since '69 and moved to DSLR's with the D1x. Have thousands of images where most are in boxes as slides and packed away only "you know who" knows where. Now I'm collecting them on CD's. Even if I'm the only one who gets any reward/pleasure for it than that's good enough for me. Someday my children and grandchildren will find all of these photos and hopefully get some enjoyment from them.
edit. OTOH maybe they'll just end up in the trash.......
Hobby for me and that will never change. Every time I try to make money from a hobby it somehow turns into work and ceases to be fun. Lesson learned and I'm not going to ruin this one since it is an activity that I very much enjoy.
Hobby... but I would love to sell a few pictures so I can write this camera off on my taxes!!
I like this poll and hope this thread stays near the top until every Nikonian D2X owner answers (just because I am also curious). But I think in the end, your numbers will be slanted towards 'hobby'. Not because there are more D2X 'hobbyists', but because more Nikonians are 'hobbyists'. I get a sense that even the majority of 'professional' Nikonians have a genuine passion for photography, thus making it a hobby as well as a source of income.
IMHO, regular forum members of any topic (computers, gaming systems, cameras, etc.) are in general 'hobbyists'.
Hobby. I have given away a bunch of my prints to folks that really liked them and my sons and their wives will never have to buy any wallpaper. I have been told that I am nuts not to sell some of my work, but then I would have to justify the expenses. It is more fun to be crazy.
It was a truck or a camera. I'm deployed for the next year and a half so a truck is worthless. Deployments are good for photo opportunities. Hence <drum roll> the camera. Now if it would just slow down enough for me to use it.
Pro. I bought my D2x specifically for that reason when I decided to make a go of it full time a few months ago. I've been doing PR and commercial type work. Just finished sorting through all my nef's from a party I shot last night.
The actual definition of Professional is to work for gain or livelyhood.
According to Nikon You have to get the "major portion of your income from photography" and do it full time. According to them I am not a Pro because I do other work to support my 60 hour per week "Hobby" and my $40,000 of Nikkor gear.
Regarding the term "professional", I think ya'll make it more complicated than it is. Bottom line is, does the majority of your income come from photography? If yes, then you're either semi-pro or pro. Otherwise, it's just a hobby even if said person is really good at his/her craftmanship.
On a related note, it would be nice if this site supported "polls", similar to that of sportsshooter, fredmiranda and the like. If there is a list of future enhancements/features, I'd add this one to the top of the list.
I'm soo relieved that the majority of the Nikonians here are hobbyists. At first, I thought I was surrounded by professionals and which made me feel isolated until now. No doubt, there is pride in owning Nikon's best. Comm'on Guys! I know there are more D2x users out there!
Pro when I'am on the clock and pure joy and fascination (with a sprinkling of creative frustration) when my time is my own to do with as I please (sorry, but the kids are too young to leave time for hobbies).
I am an old man, serious amateur , and I photograph wildlife. I have owned a D2X since it first came out. I have sold some photos , but certainly do not qualify as a professional. I too, think $ 5000.00 is a lot to pay for a hobby, but, what the heck, you can't take it with you.
If my wife knew what I spent, I most probable would be out on the streets.
