The consensus seems to be that Nikon USA customer service is lousy. Is that a Nikon thing, or is it endemic to other brands. How is Canon in that regard?

I am not at all sure about your "consensus". I seem to recall as many postive reports about Nikon service as negative. Certainly, the times I have contacted Nikon support about D1X issues I have been quite favorably impressed - I have not needed their service yet. Also, I think that you are more likely to hear from disgruntled customers than happy ones in any case. My 2cents.

Can't say about the US outfit - but Nikon in Denmark (a distributor) is excellent (Canon and Minolta are both great too).
The saying goes that Customer is King - I'm grateful I live in a constitutional monarchy only

I had a great experience with them a couple of years ago when my Coolpix 900 broke in half at the pivot point. I sent it in even though I had long since lost the recipt. They sent me back a NEW 950 in a couple of days FOR FREE!
This was a big reason for me going with the D100 over the Ca Non
