I've been a long time owner of a Nikon F4 with an assortment of AF lenses and a SB-24 flash. Recently I purchased a D100 and was wondering if I bought a SB-80DX would I get 3D matrix metering with my older non-d lenses. For that matter, could I just purchase D type lenses and use my old SB-24 and get 3D matrix metering?

Congrats on your new camera.
To answer your question, you can only get 3D matrix metering with "D" lenses and in conjunction with a 'DX' flash gun if matrix metering (fill flash) is desired.
Hope this helps.

Just to clarify,
Although you need a "D" or "G" or "P" to get the 3D matrix metering, DTTL will still work just fine with your non-D lenses. I did some trial "macro" shots with various lenses sitting on extension tubes (ie, the camera has no idea what is mounted on it). The DTTL still worked just fine. A few seconds ago, I did another post complaining about the need for DTTL (ie, Nikon did it just to make money, not for technical reasons) but still - it works very well.
