I have had my d1x for about 6 months and in controlled settings I love the camera. However, with the sb 80 in uncontrolled situations I get horribly inconsistent images. I also find the metering system as a whole to be way off. Please post any and all problems that you have had with your d1x. Do you think the firm ware will help this?
I just want a digital that works like me F5!

I have had mine for a bit over two months and have not experienced any of the problems you relate. The meter is spot on and has even been good in some high contrast situations where I expect to use spot metering. I find the SB80 results to be quite comparable to what I achieved with my F100 and SB-28 - in other words superb.
In short, I really could not be happier. It sounds as if you have some problems that perhaps Nikon should look at. I don't think the firmware addresses what you are talking about at all but they cold certainly upgrade that while looking to the other problems.

There are differences between using film and digital. Both the Canon systems and the Nikon systems (digital) do have problems with their auto flash systems. I have shot the same group in the same setting and I will get one shot under, one over and one dead on. Usually the exposure is within 1 stop over/under. Since there really is no film plane, the flash and camera doesn't react like film cameras. Using the same flash with my F100 I get perfect exposures everytime.
Using the D1X in studio settings with constant apertures and studio lights the exposure is perfect. Just don't overexpose like we do on film. Digital is the exact opposite. Under is better.

My first post!
I have had my D1x since march 2002. It has given me a few problems.
1. The AF/AE lock button never worked
2. Every now and again it locks up and the only way out is to take the battery out.
3. If I take about 4 or 5 frames quickly, I lose one of them.
4. the exposure is a problem ( I will post the reason under a post called "D1x exposure problems)
Don't get me wrong, I would not swap my nikon's for any other make, but at the price, it shouldn't do that within such a short time
If I thought I would be this thirsty this morning, I would have drunk more last night :)

My D1x and Sb-80 in close conditions requires that I use the diffuser or it will blow away the photo with light. Also in very dark conditions the SB-80 seems to blow away close objects. I have had to have my SB-80dx replaced once already because it was defective. Don't know if it's an SB-80 problem or a problem with the combination of the D1x and Sb-80
