Strictly speaking of the D1X unless you are in a hurry I wouldn't buy one just right now. I have been eyeing getting a D1X for sometime if the price is right and noticed some recent developments. Somebody correct me if I am wrong on the following...
Shortly before Photokina the EOS-1D was $5499, the D1X was $4650 and the D1H was $3650. Today the EOS-1D is $4399 @ Adorama and $4499 @ BH! IMHO with the EOS-1D $1000+ cheaper and the recent announcments of some heavy hitting digital SLRs, Nikon will have to lower prices to complete regardless of demand. But who really knows for sure but Nikon... Just my 2¢.
BTW I have had major orders from both Adorama and BH. I can vouch for both having top quality products, service, and competitive/no-gimmicks pricing. With the edge in order processing speed going to Adorama which is very important to your nerves when waiting on an order
I bought my D1x from Roberts Imaging. They are great to deal with and the price was good. I would recommend checking them out. I paid 4700 a year ago, so their price is probably better now. Ask for Jody. I don't think you should worry about what the EOS-1D is doing, it was way overpriced to start with. I know this will raise a rebuttal but I don't think the demand for the EOS has been that great, most buyers I hear from are going for the D60. For me, I prefer the D1x and doubt that Nikon's prices will be affected that much by what others are doing. The D1x is a great camera and demand is quite good. I say go ahead with your purchase and you won't regret it. That is my 2 cents.
I got my D100 thru Samys Camera in LA (mail order) they were friendly and helpful and had it in stock last time I checked. BH had none when I shopped or I would have gotten it there just becuase I'm in NYC.
