I had seen some posts about GPS and D2X before the big crash but they are no longer here. Therefore I need your help.
I would like to record GPS data as part of the metadata in my D2X raw files. The GPS device I am looking for is just going to be used for capturing data that can be send to my D2X. I will prefer a Garmin device.
As far as I have found out I shall look for NMEA0183 support as descibed in the D2X User Guide as well as the ability to connect to RS-232 on the MC-35 GPS Adaptor Cord.
On Nikons D2X promo site there is an illustration of a guy with a Garmin ForeTrex or ForeRunner on his arm that is connected to a D2X. However, either of these two devices have a RS-232 terminal. Is it possible to find an adaptor cord that converts the ten-pin remote terminal to USB or miniUSB? and will it work?
The parts are avialable from Digikey. Get an MC-27 or other now useless device with the 10 pin, or even an MC-21 and add a subminiture jack for the GPS serial interface. I made mine into a nice small box with a belt clip and a rational line length. I also added, since the connections are all in the cable, a remote trigger jack.
This is in response to message #4 from James. I have been looking at your diagram for making my own MC-35 type connector, but there are some inconsistencies in your diagram. Please clarify all pin connection. The drawing of the IC connections with capacitors does not match the schematic on the right. Which is correct? I would also like more information on the GPS interface cable connections, what kind of cable is this and how does it connect to the IC? I am not an electronic expert so a bit more information would be helpful.
Thanks guys for your comments. I have ordered a MC-35 GPS Adaptor Cord from my local Nikon store. The reason for this choice is that it seams as if it is possible to connect not only a GPS unit to my D2X using the MC-35 GPS Adaptor Cord but also the option to connect a remote cord at the same time, more specifically the MC-30, to the extra 10-pin plug on the MC-35 GPS Adaptor Cord.
EDIT: I found the user guide for the MC-35 and it provided the answer, which is: Yes
Am I right? Is it possible to connect both a GPS unit (RS-232) and a remote cord (10-pin) at the same time using the MC-35 GPS Adaptor Cord?
