Photo lab printing from digital? - workflow help
I need advice on workflow. For the past 6 weeks I've been happy creating images for web display and have saved work as sRGB color and JPEG format. Now I'd like to make some prints in addition to having images saved for web viewing. That seems to complicate everything!
I would like advice on printing at labs (Ofoto seems to be recommended, also Fuji frontier labs) from my digital files. I would like to make mostly 5x7" prints, occasionally going up to 11x14 or so. I like the convenience of Ofoto since I can upload images and have friends/family order prints if they choose. Sending out to labs seems more convenient then buying a home printer since I won't often make prints and I'd like to keep my expenses down.
I'm using a D1 and typically shoot in JPEG, although sometimes use RAW for superior image color balance control. I import images in Nikon Capture 2, then transfer to Photoshop 6 using the Nikon Adobe RGB 184.108.40.20600 colorspace to maximize colors for printing. For monitor color management I'm somewhat limited - I have an IBM T22 laptop.
So, my question for all knowledgeable readers is - what are your workflow procedures - color management, workspace and final file format for images you'd like to both view and print from labs?

It looks like you've got most things covered with your existing workflow.
While I've not used a service like Ofoto - I print my own photos with an Epson inkjet - some general rules should hold good:
1) If you're shooting JPEGs then save any intermediate files (for example when you transfer between Nikon Capture and Photoshop) using a lossless format such as TIFF so you don't lose detail through successive JPEG compressions.
2) If you use JPEG as your final format, save the files at the highest quality you practically can and embed a colour profile in them.
3) Don't reduce the image size - you need all the resolution you can get for 11x14 prints.
4) Don't use Adobe RGB for images whose primary purpose is to be displayed on the web since they'll tend to look somewhat dull and flat on an uncorrected monitor. sRGB is the best choice.
5) Shooting in RAW mode is really worthwhile if you have enough storage to cope with the larger file sizes: you get better colour, more fine detail and far greater freedom to correct any marginal images.
6) If you can get hold of a monitor it will make the process of correcting your images much easier: getting colour and contrast right on an LCD isn't easy.
Oh, and nice photo - the landscape makes a dramatic background. But you're making me jealous: I wish I had somewhere like that to go riding!
