sigma vs. nikon lense for d1x
Sigma - 50-500 4-6.3 EX APO or Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR?
Sigma: For about $1000 for 500mm. What a deal? Or am I losing sharpness. I can't find to many reviews on this lense. Its not that old it is?
Nikon: VR or not to VR? Very light weight vs the Sigma.
I will be using primary for sunny outdoor shooting. I want some decent speed in autofocus. I heard Sigma is slow autofocus. Please comment I will be ASAP.

You might like to take a look at the lens performance survey on Photozone - results for both lenses will be displayed if you browse the database for "Tele Zooms xx-500mm". The results suggest the Nikon is optically superior, especially at the long end of its range, but the Sigma will focus faster, presumably because of its built-in HSM.

In general, the sensitivity of the focusing (crosshair) sensor on a Nikon camera is usually effective down to f5.6, any lens slower than that then you will experience difficulty in focusing. As the Sigma is f6.3 at the tele end, it does exhibit some hunting. I don't own one, but had the chance to play with one on a Nikon F100. Focusing is very quiet due to HSM, but at the tele end, focusing is a little on the slow side, even on a sunny mid-day. The good thing is that you will get 750mm versus 600mm w/ the Nikon.
Don't have any experience with the Nikon VR though.
"Dude, you're getting a Nikkor !!!"

As if it were necessary, with great open mindness, ample generosity and sincere hopes, BJ Nicholls made the exercise to compare the Sigma to the Nikon VR. He bought the VR.
I bought it too. You can see a few of the results here.
If you want to see how it performs on a digital SLR, search, for example, for Cassie LaiBrook's bird images with her recent acquisition: a D100.
Have a great time :-)
