I tried to purchase the Nikon 24-85 AFS form Ritz. They do not have it yet... BUT! I was told by Ritz that it would not work on the D100! After many phone conversations I was able to inform them that yes indeed it does and that the lense is "forward" but not "backward" compatable and will not work on some older bodies and wil work on others but not with the full set of features. Ritz is now in the process of contacting Nikon to see if the can get this lens and find out who goofed.
They goofed. Many shops are selling the D100 with the 24-85 AFS as a kit so there you go. The 24-85 AFS is a G lens(does not have an aperture ring), so it'll not work 100% on older bodies like the F90, F70, etc.
If you're still interested in purchasing this lens and don't want to wait for Ritz to get it's act together, consider buying from one of the lesser-known online vendors like Canoga or Roberts Imaging. I found out through another forum that Canoga had it in stock a long while before B&H or Adorama did. Purchased one and it arrived as promised - official US model, so I've got the warranty, etc. And they're priced below the NY retailers, so it was quite the steal.
Similar limitations on the 24-85 AFS G - at focal lengths below 28mm, use of the built-in flash on the N65/80 (and presumably D100) will cause vignetting. I recall reading this on the lens' instruction manual...
