need help with F/2.8 80-200 lens decision for d1x
I need help from someone who has used the following lenses. They will be used on a D1x and an F100. I really want to get the AFS 80-200 Nikon, but the price is high, so my questions are as follows;
1. Is the AFS lens clearer at the F stops and throughout the zoom range over the standard Nikon 80-200 f/2.8?
2. Has anyone used the Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-200mm f/2.8 EX APO IF HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D and how does that compare to the Nikons through the F stop ranges and zoom ranges for clarity?
3. Has anyone used the Tokina Zoom Telephoto AF 80-200mm f/2.8 AT-X 828AF Pro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D and how does that compare to the Nikons through the F stop ranges and zoom ranges for clarity?
I am looking for the most usable lens throughout the f/stops with greatest clarity through the zoom. It doesn't necessarily have to be the fastest AF for my needs. Thanks

I haven't used the Tokina and Sigma lenses. I have the 80-200 AFS and it is a beautiful lens and my images are very sharp throughout the range of F-stops.
I, personally, wouldn't go for any other brand of lens other than Nikon, the build and image quality is superior to any other lens I have used in the past..
You said that AF speed wasn't that important, have you not considered the AFD version of the 80-200 f2.8 Nikkor?? It's basically the same lens, image quality is just the same but it is cheaper than the AFS version.
Hope this helps,

Yes, I have looked at the AF-D version. Both look nice. I am also looking at the 80-400 VR as an alternative, but the camera store says it's not as clear as the 80-200 and then get a teleconverter. But, most of my work is handheld with nature type shots and also my 2 year old daughter. So I thought the VR might be really nice. Indecision.

The VR is a very convienent lens. Comparison to the 80-200 AFS the 80-200 AFS is the winner in preformance and sharp images. The 80-400 VR wins the zoom range, most success in error free pictures. Its great for film cameras not to waste film on shakey images. Take one picture and its good with the VR.
Ask some Nature Photographers about it. Generaly VR is a luv it or hate lens. Within its limitations its a very capable lens.
