Here is one for you. I just got a response from my dealer that they just received a bunch of D200 kits with the 18-200mm VR II, but no individual lenses. I've been waiting for mine since mid-December, (ordered with a deposit) when I picked up my D200, along with a couple of dozen others. It seems early adopters are to get to the back of the bus.
Apparently all the kits were spoken for before they were delivered. Nikon tech support keeps telling me they are in high demand, they won't compromise quality to turn them out faster, but they won't address, why they have decided to include them in kits before satisfying backorders. This to me seems like a slap in the face to existing customers.
>I just got a response from my dealer that they just received a bunch of D200 kits with the 18-200mm VR II
I’m waiting on a D200/18-200 kit and I just received the following from the dealer I have it ordered with: “Nikon is having a hard time meeting the demand. Apparently there have been problems with a few of their shipments from Japan and they have had to be sent back.”
Maybe I'll be getting a different email tomorrow. I hope anyway.
Its just a slap on the face of Nikon that it has taken this long to deliver a lens though. Is it really worth all the bad PR just to announce something before Christmas when you know you can't reasonably deliver the product? I don't think it would have hurt anyone's feelings if they had held off announcing the lens at PMA and then stated that it would be available in mass quantities at the end of March/beginning of April.
>I don't think it would have hurt anyone's feelings if >they had held off announcing the lens at PMA and then stated >that it would be available in mass quantities at the end of >March/beginning of April. > > > >But plenty of people do and have had this lens since >mid-December. > >Kindof reads like "because I can't have it NOW no one can" > >I know that wasn't your intention, but I got my lens here in >the UK within 2 weeks of ordering.
Nope...wasn't my intention. It just sounds like the marketing department was leading the way on this one. It was just a rush to get *something* out before Christmas...even if it meant everyone else would have to wait 4-5 months to get theirs. If the rumors of mid to late April before they're readily available, my suspicions may have proven to be correct.
I ordered a 18-200mm VR II from Adorama for $669.95 USD on December 20 and they still have not shipped it. I'm all but certain they are not filling their back orders but are instead selling the lens (with the huge mark-up the lens has now) through some other avenue.
Tempted to create a post asking everyone where/when they ordered the lens, for how much and if they have received it yet - this should reveal what's going on.
If you look around on the Internet the 18-200 vr does show up frequently. Not plentiful to say the least, but they're around. For example: Cameta Camera if you want to do business with them, has the lens quite often. I just checked & there's none this evening, but think yesterday or a couple days ago there were 2 - 3 of them on their site. Of course they're charging the extra money & their "auction sales always go around the same" for between $850-$900 USD there. Just how badly do you want one i guess is the NAS question. Its a real good lens. Note the "Nikon Notice of Issue" with this particular lens on the Nikonian Main Page for use of it with the D70, D100 cameras. I guess there's a fluke somewhere for the compatibality.
I ordered this lens from PC Connection about three days ago. I was expecting this to be about a few weeks or more before I actually got it. To my surprise I received notification that it shipped out yesterday. They currently show this as being IN STOCK.
Anyone who is looking for this lens, I would recommend jumping on this before they sell out again. I would recommend calling in on their 800 number to order to make sure it is in stock first though.
Just an FYI.
I was able to get this lens for $708 including shipping. Not a bad deal, considering I was ALMOST about to pay the $900 to Cameta and cancel my order. Boy am I glad I didn't do that!
I just called the 800 number at PC Connection and they list the Nikon 18-200 at $799. When I mentioned that someone had reported buying for $709 including shipping, the sales lady refused to acknowledge that price. The lens was in stock, but I refused to pay $799 for it.
I pre-ordered "mine" end of Nov beginning of Dec last year... still no news... my dealer does not even get an idea from Nikon when the lenses will be delivered... I phone a lot of shops in the vicinity, nobody can deliver, some promise the lens for within a few weeks if you pay in advance... no guarantee whatsoever... Hope I'll get one before Christmas

I DO NOT work for Kenmore Camera nor do I get a referral fee, but anyone who doesn't give them a chance are masochist. Three folks who frequent this fourm, including myself have ordered this lens from Kenmore and received them in 7-10 days. No guarantees you will be as successful, but their track record speaks for itself.

I placed an order with Kenmore for the lense this morning, real nice guy named Chad, price is $699. There's a list and I'm currently around 50th on it, word apparently has spread fast. He said that if Nikon keeps shiiping them like they have been the last few weeks that a 3 week estimate was safe.
>Still waiting for mine to come in but I won't pay some of >the $899 price gouging prices for the few with stock. For >some reason, Adorama has removed the lens completely from >their website?? > > I cancelled my order at Express cameras... I will not pay the gouging either. I would imagine Adorama got tired of calls and emails asking when the 18-200 would be in. I would also imagine it will be back on there when the supply increases.
Instead, I bought a 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR. I think that will do better for me in the long run anyway..
>I just got a response from my dealer >that they just received a bunch of D200 kits with the >18-200mm VR II, but no individual lenses. >color="white"] > >I have checked with numerous online/offline dealers in the >US and have not found one which has received the D200/18-200 >kit. > >I would like to know the name of this dealer who received >these kits.
Mine is on order with a local Camera shop in Belmont MA, Zeff Photosupply. They are a reputable deal and I buy lots from them. Nikon rep is doing demo's there all the time. They recived one shipment of about 4 units in early January and none, accept for kits since. My salesman guessed it could be late May before he sees another shipment.
I've had mine on order with Adorama since Dec 28th. The order price was $669. That's pretty low and my presumption is that they're filling the higher priced orders first, although that's only speculation. I just can't believe that a store with as big a volume as Adorama isn't receiving lenses from Nikon. They haven't answered any of my emails inquiring about where I stand on the list and when I might expect to receive the lens. Anyone have any more news?
From all the forums that I've visited, no one has reported that Adorama has shipped anyone the 18-200mm VR except for the initial shipment. This leaves me with no doubt that they are selling them under a different storefront name at the significant markup and sitting on the orders they took for $669. Thank you Ken Rockwell for recommending them - NOT! Why he continues to promote them......... They do not have a very good reseller rating (http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1759.html)
FWIW, I got mine and quite quickly from Adorama late in December for the original $669 price. (I did not preorder.) It seems clear that their order tracking/backorder system is messed up but I see no evidence that they are doing anything intentionally. Still, that doesn't help if you're still waiting for your lens!
I have dealt with Kenmore and although they require a $100 deposit they are sticking by the $699 price and claim to have an OK stream of lenses coming through.
What about the gap between when you ordered/received the lens and the fact that NO ONE (no matter what forum you visit) who ordered after that time frame has reported receiving the lens from Adorama. All major stores have been receiving shipments every other week at a minimum.
Think I got lucky. walked in Ashrafs in down town Manama, Bahrain and there it was shining in the sun and like all his Nikon stock reduced. Yipee only $600. I questioned why, as this beast is not easy to find and the sales guy said his Bahraini boss had decided to reduce all stock as he had every March since he open some years ago. Wish I had enough for the D2X! Didn't dare to ask for a deal incase the credit card fairy lost control...........
Bill: If Adorama's current price is above their original price, I would suspect they are fulling the higher price orders first. Unfortunately, it is a no win situation for people waitng for the lens at their original price. Until the market is flooded with this lens, they are low priority to Adorama. It is distrubing that they don't even respond to customer e-mail inquiries.

I finally gave up on Adorama after waiting 85 days. On a whim I called Glazer's in Seattle on Saturday and they had only one in stock. I drove up there that morning despite paying $749 and 8.8%sales tax.
BTW - it's a fairly high serial number and made in Japan vice Thailand.
From a suggestion on this board, I put in an order at www.penncamera.com for the lens on March 1st, they shipped on the 24th, and it arrived yesterday. Awesome lens & so quiet. Just thought I'd chime in for all of you that were waiting so long. Oh, the price was $699 w/ free shipping. -Steve
You might want to call KEH and ge you name on list. I did this about five weeks ago and last week ago they called me saying that they had some coming in. At that time I gave them my credit card info and this week I have my 18-200,they are chargng $729.00. I am really starting to love the 18-200mm for a general walk around lens and the VR lets me leave the tripod at home.
