Some of you may have seen my earlier post on another thread regarding a 35PC. The lens in question will not work properly on my N70 as it was built prior to af camera bodies. Something will effect the af module or the pc contacts. Not sure. I read somewhere that theses leses can be modified to work with "newer" af cameras.
My questions are: "Does anyone know what the modification is and how much it will cost?" I'm calling around but haven't been able to get to the Nikon tech rep yet. Nikon's line has also been busy.
Thanks in advance...

first have a look at your user manual of the F70. There are different lenses mentioned with serial numbers (lens with numbers lower than xxx cannot be used...). Or your lens could be a non-Ai lens. Nikon itself stopped modifying non-Ai lenses but there's a guy who says he can modify nearly all old Nikkors. Don't know his name, but feed an internet searching engine with terms like "Ai modication" an you should get a result.
Don't know if this helps you, but it was worth a trial.

Thanks for the info. Still trying to find out if it is AI or not. Maybe it doesn't really matter, I think I'll just get the lens after all for ...what's the next holiday? SEPTEMBER 21ST DAY!, yeah, that's it, and an FE2 for Christmas, unless I can scrounge enought cash before then. (My wife usually checks my credit card statements so...)

Be aware that non AI lenses do not mount on the FE2. There is some metal on the aperture ring on non AI lenses that is removed from the AI / AIS lenses. Non AI lenses can be mounted on the F3 since the aperture interface for the camera can be swung up out of the path of the lens.
Either of the first two pro cameras, the F and F2 allow the mounting of non AI lenses. I am ignorant when it comes to Nikkormats... but they may be an option. I'd still recommend the F or F2, because of the 100% finder. PC lens use is a step below view camera use, (film size), is it slow and considered... not a snapshot. The viewfinder will aid composition.
If you are locked into the FE2, (a great camera), make sure that the lens is AI'ed. Of course, for 200 dollars, (I still can't believe that price!), You can have the lens modified to AI. The back of "SHUTTERBUG" magazine has ads for people who do that work.

As a fellow N70 user I also have run across excellent deals on lenses for my Ftn that are goimg to need conversion to fit my N70. The guy for the job is John White at http://www.aiconversions.com/PricesAndShipping.htm
and he says he can do both direction conversions (non AI to AI-this is a milling or replacement of the ring at the base of the lens to fit the indexing system of the newer bodies, and newer lenses fitted with the ears for indexing to the older bodies-F,F2 and some Nikkormats)
I am trying to arrange a trip from my home in Chicago to Michigan where Mr. White is located to have my stabl;e of lenses made compatable to both my bodies.

Thanks for info. I still haven't had a chance to get to the store (I've got a rush deadline - thought those only happened in school, boy was I wrong) but maybe tonight. As of yesterday, they still had it. Keep your fingers crossed...
