Nikkor 70-300mm G manual focus problems?
I just recieved my 70-300mm G lens and the first thing I noticed is that auto-focussing is *very* noisy and it just doesn't sound 'right' (compared to my 28-80mm G). It also seems to have difficulty focussing in indoor lighting (keeps going back and forth).
Also, when I set the camera to manual focus, the focussing ring is *very* hard to turn (unlike my 28-80mm G). I am not quite sure if this is normal for this lens... If this sounds abnormal to you, I will have to consider replacing the piece I bought with another piece.
I would appreciate if someone would share their experience with this lens.
Thanks for your help!

I have a Tamron 70-300 which a similar lens. The AF is definitely a bit noisier than the 28/80, because this lens seems much lower-geared. However it shouldn't sound rough or coarse.
The focus ring on the Tamron is very smooth - not loose like some AF lenses, but very easy to turn and reasonably well damped. If, as you say, yours is very hard to turn, then you may have a defective lens. Whatever you do, don't try to force it, or you may break something.

I you have set your camera to manual, the lens should not be hard to turn, on the contrary, it should feel "loose". I would get immediately to where you bought it an check others like it.
On the hunting issue: yes, that is what you compromise for not having a wide aperture (f/2.8 for example) lens, but you get in return a great price.
Have a great time :-)
