I have been thinking about aquiring this lens or possibly the prior non d lens.
Is there a big difference between the D and non D versions? What are they other than the D chip? Should I get the new D or a used non D?

I got the non "D" apart from the chip and the aperture lock button they are identical in all other respects though in my experience the older non "D" seem to suffer from less focus errors than newer lenses. No flame on newer lenses but just my personal experience, i have found very little difference in exposure etc with or without flash. I don't think this is as true of the original lenses, there is more than one type of 18omm F2.8 AF get the one that looks the same as the "D" it is ohh soo sharp focuses fast and accurately you wont regret it. Can you tell i am enthusiastic about this lens!
p.s. I am an extreme case as i got rid of my 80-200 MM AFS and got this instead with an 85mm F1.8 AF lighter faster more portable and more fun.
