just got my 20mm MF. originaly I had a 24-105 af zoom but it was too 'plasticy' I would have trashed it in a couple of months and it didn't focus where I wanted it to, so back to the shop it went...
What I need to know is, do I I need 'slim' filters for this lens?

Yes. Slim filters, or the Nikon oversized circular polarizer.
By the way: compliments! I own one, and it is a really wonderful lens. Very sharp, very little distortion, very nice solid feel.

Do you mean the 20f2.8 AIS? then you need to go with Nikon filters. I did have this lens for a long time but it got stolen and I replaced it with the AFD version. Both great lenses. The MF will take Nikon filters without vignetting and also take the 62mm polariser providing no other filters are used. I tried ultra slim Hoyas that looked great and thinner than the Nikons but to my amazement they caused vignetting, so I would be careful with slim filters. If you decide on Nikon filters, then shop around, especially with mail order or internet sites, the price differences can be huge.
