Not trying to revive the metal vs. plastic debate... I'll grant that metal can be more durable. But is metal really necessary to hold the glass elements in a lens? Wouldn't plastic do as good a job.

I really want the 80-200mm f/2.8 lens but I just can't see myself taking that lens on 3 month backpacking trips. Do you think Nikon would make it with a plastic construction for those of us who value light weight lenses?
