I saw that Nikon has released the new AF-S II lenses in 300, 400, 500 and 600 mm (Product numbers 2125, 2127, 2131 and 2133 respectively).
I managed to find the 300 mm for sale at bhphoto's site, but haven't found the others anywhere. I was thinking of saving up to buy the 300 or 400mm, and was wondering which lens fellow Nikonians would think was best for sports photography, specifically soccer. The 300mm is around $4700, and I imagine that the 400mm will be a good deal more than that once it's available in stores.

I shoot u18 girls competitive soccer all the time & I'd find a non-zoom pretty restrictive. I currently use the 80-400/vr. The range is perfect & I have no complaints about the quality of the pictures. It takes a little getting used to because it is not afs, but it works great once you get used to it & not trying to go from far to near or the opposite. I use it w an f100, vertical grip, & a monopod.
You'll find the vr lens cheaper, smaller, & lighter & you can actually get them these days.

Like Kim, I have also bought the 80-400VR and I find myself using it mostly as a 400mm f/5.6 lens. For it's shutter speed capabilitites you could say it is equivalent to a 400mm f/2.8
I like it very much. I am now therefore hoping for a 600mm AF-S II.
