since i received the 70-200 vr, I decided to do some IQ testing. camera was set to program, ISO 200. here are the cropped images to compare.
I used the 35mm prime, the Sigma 70-300, the Nikon 70-200 (subject of the comparison) and for giggles I tossed on the vivitar 1.4 tele

Nearly all Nikon lenses are acceptably sharp. IQ testing is not for me. It requires discipline and scientific rigor that is the exact opposite of why I like photography. I can't draw any conclusions from your tests, but that doesn't mean there are none to draw. Enjoy your gear. The 70-200 has served me well. Many a fine image has come from it.
