Hello all,

I wanted to share a disappointing experience I have had with several versions of this lens. I currently shoot with a D4 and D800E. Subjects cover the spectrum but I have an affinity for aviation.

When this lens was announced I couldn't wait to try one out. I love, love, love my 70-200/2.8 VRII but honestly was waiting for Nikon to come out with the updated 80-400.

So, I rented a new copy from lensrentals.com and headed to anchorage for 2 days of shooting. After 2 hours on my D800E I was perplexed. The focus would not stop "hunting". It would make a slight clicking noise and the focus indicator never really stopped coming on and off. As a result all shots were slightly blurred. I shoot in AF-C, and focus using AF ON button. I thought that might be the issue so I switched all the settings but no good. I called LensRentals and they walked me through some trouble shooting all to no avail. I had my friends D700 available and tried it on his camera...same story. So.....lensrentals shipped (fedex'ed) me another new 80-400 to my hotel and I was hoping for the best. Same results. I was bummed, thought I just got 2 bad lenses!

Fast forward to a month later and I am in my local camera store in Denver telling the Nikon guy my story. He doesn't believe me and pulls a new D800 off the shelf and mates it to his unboxed new 80-400G. Focus hunted....just like before.

I just didn't want to give up, so I rented another (different)copy from lensrentals. Unfortunately, same story. This lens is either suffering from quality issues out of the factory or I just have really bad luck.

Guess I will just save for the 200-400.
