Will Nikon make a 24mm f1.8 in the coming future ?
I am thinking of getting a 24mm f2.8 but after I read the Practical Photography's review on Sigma 28mm f1.8, I decided to wait a bit longer. Sigma is coming out with 28mm f1.8, 24mm f1.8 and 20mm f1.8 with pretty attractive price. Do you all think Nikon will come out with a bigger apperture for their wide angle primes ?

Well, according to some illustrious marketing scholars that do me the honor of saying they are my friends, among the various Nikon's marketing ploys is one something like: "Aha, so that's the way you want play, ok; let me show how it is done, if there is really a market and after you goofed". That we saw with the 28-Xmm zooms moving into 24-Xmm zooms.
Nikon has the beautiful MF 24mm f/2 introduced in 1978, 28mm f/2 introduced since 1971, 35mm f/1.4 from 1970 and 50mm f/1.2 from 1979, all four still in production.
The 14mm, 16mm, 18mm, 20mm and 24mm f/2.8D AF are also still in production. Now, how complex and costly is to make these beauties into less than f/2 apertures is beyond me. Furthermore, how useful would it be at those focal lengths?

The problem is that while on paper some of these figures look good, in reality they have little or no practical value. At 20mm and below one can handhold down to a 1/3sec shutter speed at f2.8, slower than this say 1/2sec is impossible without electro/mechnical aides. So where is the value in f1.8? We have already got a 24mmf2 and 28f1.4 in the range. Nikon have yet to produce a AF version of 35mmf1.4, so I do not see a 24mm being any more in need of a revamp, I think it is a waste of time concentrating on ultra wideangles, we are doing nicely and Nikon do make the best wideangle lenses. Still, your mileage might vary

I have the 24mm f2.8. It is a wonderful lens. I have not personally run into a situation that requires f1.8 -- as most shots with this lens have been outdoors and w/tripod under lower light conditions. I personally feel that is a great value and produces excellent contrast and sharpness.
Just my two cents )
