I have been using my D600 with interior people shots with the kit lens (24-85) and like the results.

Of course, I am really want a faster lens (24-70 f2.8 for portraits type shots) to shoot without a flash but I already getting caught by depth of field challenges (worse than my D90) where say the nose is very sharp but other feature behind the focus plane are not and tricky to focus behind a feature (to have foreground sharp).

I do not think I am going to get better depth of field with the 24-70 say at 70 than I would with the 24-85 at same focal length/f-stop and only gets worse at wide open. This means a fast lens does not solve that problem.
