I am new to Nikon equipment (new D600 & several lenses) but thus far impressed. I recently ordered a 105 micro from a local camera store and was told nikon was out of stock. I am patiently waiting but surprised that Nikon would be out of stock on what I assume is a fairly popular lense. Is availability often a problem with Nikon equipment?
Availability of Nikon bodies and lenses is not really much different than gear from competitors. B&H has the Nikkor 105mm VRII micro in stock. So does Berger Brothers. Adorama is backordered. They're in stock at Calumet. It varies - same as all other products from all other makers. Your local dealer may be real good, but he doesn't necessarily represent the whole picture.
Thanks to all for prompt responses. I bought from Calumet as I traded in Canon 5D and lenses. I have bought most things from B & H and yes they had it in stock. Howard, you said Calumet has it in stock? I just went to their website which says "call for stock"; apparently you called them so I will do same and see if it is in stock now. Thanks to all, Jim B
Nikon make many of their pro lenses in batches - that's at least partially due to the way that they make the optical glass in batches. (Nikon make their own glass.) Availability has been problematic for the past several years, although I can't remember the 105 Micro being one of the ones flickering in and out of stock. Generally the more exotic the more variable the availability has been. For what it's worth, B&H has it in stock at the moment.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. - Nicomachean Ethics
Just called Calumet and they don't have in stock and no promise date. Will go back to B&H next time. Shame of it is I want to buy locally and appreciate the service/advice etc (even willing to pay sales tax) but availability is king ! Jim B
