Nikon's new 80-400mm lens and focus breathing
The term "focus breathing" is new to me, but I understand that it is especially prevalent in the new 80-400mm lens at around 260mm when close focused. Could someone explain this to me in some detail?

See this. The executive summary is that the loss in focal length at minimum focus is a consequence of design tradeoffs made to make the focusing system lightweight and therefore fast.
