24-85 vr versus 24-120 f/4 vr at 24 or 85mm's and other questions
Having just purchased a D800 I'm going through my lenses trying to decide which to keep and which to practically give away on eBay. How well does the 24-85 VR compare to the 24-120 vrII in the same focal length range? If the 24-120 is clearly better, I'll pick one up as a everyday lens but that title goes to the 24-85vr for now. Also complicating this decision are the reviews that state the 24-85 vr is better and others that state the 24-120 vrII is clearly better. Which one is it? Whichever lens I end up with it'll be part of my 4 lens travel kit consisting of the 50 f/1.4g, 24 -85 or 120 vrII, 70-300 vrII or possibly the 70-200 f/4 VRIII and a wide angle zoom, haven't chosen one yet but I'm leaning towards the 16-35 vr. And lastly a SB-800 speedlight.

I have tried both and not thrilled with either. They are not bad at all, but I find that it lacks punch/sharpness. I was really tempted to purchase the 24-120 f/4 VR with the current rebate (for vacations), but finally decided not to purchase it.
But both are excellent travel/vacation lens.
For now, I still prefer to change the lens (28 and 85, both are f/1.8 AFS G) as the quality it much better. But changing the lens is challenge when one is traveling with family.
If possible, you can try to rent both the lens or use it in a store and compare the results.

The 24-120mm fv VR is an excellent lens. The IQ is vibrant, sharp and the build of the lens solid. It's one of my favourite lenses.
I have the previous (non-VR) 24-85mm which has surprisingly good IQ (for it's price & era) and I have no doubt the newer 24-85mm VR is better yet - if not quite as good, at least close enough to the 24-120mm for IQ alone to be virtually a moot point deciding between the two.
Were I making your decision I would put much more emphasis on their respective weight, focal length range and my budget.
Are you looking for a light compact inexpensive mid-range zoom? Then the 24-85mm is the choice.
Is carrying extra weight worth the increased zoom range, nano coating, and better build? Price no object? Then perhaps the 24-120 f4 is the lens for you.
my two cents
