Honestly, the country of origin really makes no difference in how the lens performs. All the factories work to the same specifications that Nikon sets. However, I can alo say the AFS version is superior in performance to the AFD version. And is likely better than an AIS version,
"Made In" is very misleading because China, Thailand, etc. are assembly points. All the components are manufactured by suppliers to Nikon's specs and shipped to these locations for assembly into the final product. I am sure Nikon has the same quality control procedures in all their assembly plants to ensure consistency. The bottom line is that if you want an "affordable" high quality Nikkor lens, it will probably NOT have "Made In Japan" stamped on it.
Just my two cents....JL

There is no reason to get rid of a lens you love and get good results from, especially since it's the later D version. At one time Nikon made all their lenses in Japan but when they made the same model in China there was no difference in build or optical performance.
All my manual focus lenses were built in Japan, including the Series E lenses. Most of my auto focus lenses were also made in Japan but they are either pro lenses or made a few years ago. My most recent AFS pro-sumer and DX lenses were made in China with the exception of the AF 10.5 fisheye and the AFS 18-200mm (very early version). They all perform very well.
>I wouldn't worry about the country of origin if both lenses >are in full working order. I would keep the "D" >version for the added distance information it provides. > >You can probably sell the non-D lens here and make a few bucks >for your dad and yourself if you don't need two 50mm lenses. > >JCA
I really don't have a need for a second 50 mm 1.4 so I'll just sell it for my dad.
I appreciate the aspect of sentimentality that some of you are raising. I actually have several of my Father’s (and Father-in-law’s) lenses. We have some duplication where we needed to so we could both shoot together at the same time. He was considering selling some of his extras and offered me this one before he sells. Appreciate the input.
