I have been reading a lot of favorable reviews about this lens. I shoot a fair amount of HS football and soccer. How does this lens compare so far as fast AF and subject isolation? I currently have an 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S (which I think is a wonderful lens), but would welcome a lighter version so long as it meets or exceeds the 80-200 performance. I would be using with a D7000 or a D3.
I also have a 70-300 VR, but I would prefer the fixed and faster aperture of the 70-200 f/4. If I liked the F/4 I would probably wind up selling both the 80-200 and 70-300, and then slap on a 1.4 TC to the 70-200 when I needed the extra range.

I have not used it for sports, just outdoor events. But I found the 70-200 f/4 is just as good, same image quality and AF speed as the 70-200 VRII which I also have. Obviously it is a stop slower, so in bad light you will need to bump up ISO sooner and get more noise. In good light, you won't see a difference. The difference in subject isolation is much less than one would think. I have done comparisons, and I can't tell which image comes from which less unless I look at the EXIF data. At 200mm and f/4 you still get very good isolation. This is very easy to try out: just take some of your typical shots with your 80-200 at both f/2.8 and f/4 and you will see what I mean.

My son is a soccer, so I had the same difficult choice to make..and finally, two weeks ago, I decided to buy the 70 200 2.8 because at first, it’s faster and that can be very useful when the weather is dull or to use it for inside sport.
And secondly, i find the AF faster, so, according to me, it’s one of the more important parameter in sport photography..
I tried it yesterday for the first time and was very satisfied with the results; this lens is a very, very good one.
make a good decision!
