Haven't used the 1.7 but my 70-200 f4 works just fine with my TC-20EIII, so you should be ok with the 1.7. You don't say what camera you are using.Your profile has no listings on your equipment so I'm assuming that you have a pro body.My D4 has no problem focusing at f8.
In response to the question do I think the 2x TC with the 70-200mm f/4 being sharper than the 30-300mm, my experience was that I had the 28-300 mm, and the 70-200 TC combination is waaaaaaay sharper than my copy of the 28-300 mm. I sold the 28-300mm because of that difference. I could have simply had a bad copy. Your mileage may vary. Jim
I agree and that is particularly true as you near 300mm on the 28-300. That said, I kept it as a decent three lens travel kit on a D700. The 28-300, 16-35 and a 50 f/1.8 and I'm set for a vacation. For more serious shooting, it's the 16-35, 24-120 and 70-200 f/4 (or the Bigma) and some primes.
