I'm thinking of buying a non-VR 300 f/2.8 AF-S II (it's lighter than the VR versions) and using it handheld with a 2.0 TC III - I tried the TC on my 300 f/4 and the shots were really not sharp - no doubt I can try some fine tuning (D800e and D3s) but it wasn't really adequate. Can anyone point me to good shots with the 300/2.8 and the 2.0 TC? I'd love to see what the potential is. Thanks much. Dennis
I have only a tiny bit of experience with that combo (it was with the v2 TC20, tho); I was quite disappointed. I'll have to try to dig up the pictures at home. Pretty much the only non-sharp pictures I took with that 300/2.8, in the brief time I had it.
I was shooting Owls in flight on the weekend with a group including a fellow who had some version of the 2.8 and the TC20E III. I asked him about AF speed with the combo and he said it was just fine. He also texted me two photos afterwards, which on my iPhone looked great.
Thanks Steve. There are at least 4 versions of the 2.8 that are still around - hard to know what he might have had. I plan to go try out the lens combo at a local dealer - no doubt that will be the best bet. Thanks again. Dennis
