I just got a new 18-300mm lens. Only problem is I can't get the rear lens cap (camera end) off. I have twisted quite hard in both directions and there is no give at all. There is the white dot on the lens and on the lens cap there is a rather prominent rib at about 11:00 relative to the dot.

The correct direction is clockwise as you look at the end of the cap.
If it's really that stuck maybe you have to take it back to the dealer.
I was going to suggest sawing the cap off with a bread knife but... decided against that advice!

Somebody at Nikon needs a new torque wrench. Just kidding. I have experienced just the opposite. Almost every new Nikon lens I have purchased has had a loose rear cap. The cap on one recently fell off as I took it out of the plastic bag.
