I have just bought a used D700 with a mere 1000 shutter actuations and looks like new - result: a very happy bunny.

I shoot a variety of mainly, outdoor subjects and used a Nikon 12-24mm f4 DX and a 17-55mm f2.8 DX on my D300 along with a Nikon 70-300mm VR . I intend to keep the D300 and 70-300 and use them for wildlife and trade in the other 2 lenses for a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8.

With the D300 I very rarely shot the 12-24 wider than 15mm (which is equivalent to about 22mm on full frame) so I was wondering that instead of getting a 16-35, whether a 20mm f2.8 would suffice. I feel one of the joys of the D700 is the availability of wide primes and the 20mm would also be a cheaper and less heavy option.
To a large extent it depends on how good the 24-70 is down at the wide end or would it be advisable to have the "overlap" that the 16-35 would give.
