28-70 f/2.8 Rubber Zoom Band Repair
My 28-70 f/2.8 is on my camera (D700, and since yesterday, D80 ) 95% of the time. I love this lens. I bought it used several years ago here on the "I want to sell" forum.
The lens has been put through the mill, including a recent fall where the hood was shattered. It still performs like new.
However, he rubber gnarling on the zoom ring has come loose. It doesn't affect the lens operation except my having to push it back in place from time to time...of course, this usually happens when there is a lot of action I'm trying to capture.
This is something I feel I can "glue" back in place, but I don't want to use the wrong type of adhesive and damage the lens. I'd rather leave it as is than risk damage.
Obvious question is: what adhesive should be used to make this minor repair.
Thanks in Advance!!

This is an area where I think I'd want an expert opinion. So my advice is to call one of the authorized repair depots - not Nikon. Nikon will want you to send the lens in for evaluation and repair. The authorized repair depots probably won't have such a narrow view of the world, and they will also have the experience to perhaps give you some reliable advice.
I would certainly feel comfortable saying the following: you almost certainly do NOT want to use any of the liquid cyanoarcylics (ie "superglue") as you just don't know where they will end up in no time at all. This is especially true if there are any screws or other holes in the zoom ring under the rubber. But that only tells you what NOT to use, rather than what you SHOULD use.
I am curious as to what you find out.

I think this is something you could fix yourself, by replacing the rubber ring on the zoom, if I understand your problem. If you look at this site (which rplst8 recently posted in the English Cafe)
you will see that the rubber zoom ring is a replacement part that Nikon sells, and that can you can install yourself by removing the old ring and slipping the new one on. The 28-70 isn't one of the lenses listed on their site, but you should be able to get the replacement part somewhere and do this yourself at relatively little cost.

I just had to do this on a 17-55. Any Nikon service center should be able to replace it. I used Camera Service Pro in Smyrna, GA, and they had the band in stock. Hopefully, your local service center will as well.
