Bought mint used 300 f/4 Nikkor...Was I wrong?
Today I was in my favorite local store picking up some slides made with the store's borrowed Hasselblad X-Pan ( another story for another time) when a lady came in with a large box of gear to put on consingnment. Included was a D-1, a Vr 80-400, a 20mm f 2.8 and a mint 300 F4 ED ( not the new silent model0. It was too much for me, I bought the 300 right out of her hand for $600 USD. I had not researched it, but I figure it has to be better than my 70-300 "G" zoom. Was I wrong? Should I take it back, or, will I love it? I do a lot of nature work, but until lately that has been largely macro and landscape. Now a stirring of iterest in birds, wildlife, etc.

Well, the little lady knew her stuff. The used 300mm f/4 ED IF, with caps, sells, in excellent condition, for US$616 at Keh.com. In excellent plus condition, with caps and case: US$645.
You made a good buy. Congratulations.

I have used this lens for over 10 years in very harsh environments with excellent results. The price appears to be in the ball park. You will enjoy this lens, particulary if you photograph wildlife.

Good price for a good lens; of course what else can I say. That is what I listed my five-month old 300mm F/4 on this board for when I put it up for sale.
