I will be getting a Nikon 70-200mm VRII next month from a local camera store. My goal is to eventually move from the DX to the FX format so I am building up my collection of lenses that will work with both formats. I am also contemplating purchasing either the 28mm f/1.8G, 85mm f/1.8G or the 1.4 teleconverter. The TC will only work with the 70-200mm until I purchase a super telephoto lens (possibly 300mm or 400mm for birding/airshows). Right now I am interested in vacation/travel photography (some portraits of family) so would the 1.4TC be a benefit or would I be better served with the 28mm or 85mm lens?
Since he doesn't have the 70-200 yet, and plans to do vacation shots, I don't see a TC being all that helpful now. I suggest wait until you get the 70-200 and actually have a need for the extra reach that a TC can provide.
