i have the nikon 80-200/2.8 now and am looking to get the 300/4 af-s. i'd also love to get the af-s version of the 80-200. i do almost all sports photography and therefore need the speed provided by the af-s. i just became aware of sigma's line of lenses with the HSM. Is this comparable to nikon's af-s or is it slower and just a marketing gimmick? I'd be more than willing to trade in my nikkor 80-200 for the sigma 70-200/2.8 hsm if it's a good lens. it's loads cheaper and looks nice. also i was considering sigma's 300/4 af-s and maybe a 1.4x tc to give me a 420/5.6 Any suggestions? I would hate to pay extra $$$ to have Nikon on my lens... I know they make quality products but it seems as technology continues to improve, third-party manufacturers are catching on and making equal competition.

I was in the same dilemma as you, I wanted to know whether the HSM could match up to the AFS lenses. After checking around at various sites (I have forgotton which ones, sorry ) It became clear that the HSM lenses tend to hunt around a lot and were not as fast as the AFS equivalents..
Funnily enough, I too shoot sports, mainly cycling and finally splashed out on a new 80-200 AFS lens (last week) and traded in my "two ring" 80-200 f2.8 Nikkor. I shot some stuff at the weekend and am expecting the results back anyday now.
Up until now all of my work has been with manual focus (pre-focusing and a bit of tracking, which I might add, I wasn't very good at!) With my new AFS lens, I just pick it up touch the shutter and track!! I still let out a little chuckle everytime it follows the subject with perfect accuracy.. }>The thing that gets me about this lens is that when you track a subject (for example, in my case, a cyclist coming directly toward me), you never notice it focus! The image just stays sharp all of the way. Other lenses I have tried will wait and then play catch up, not with the AFS...
I am sorry I have bored everyone to tears with this, but never has a lens made such a profound impact on my picture taking as this has, it's time to start saving up for that 17-35...........
I don't know what sports you shoot, but I am sure that you will appriciate the AFS more (even if your bank balance doesn't agree!).
PS. Just in case you were unsure, I'd go for the AFS over the HSM

I do not know anything about the HSM version but the AFS lens is superb with teleconverters, any of them TC201,TC14, TC200, TC20E etc...with no apparent fall in clarity or sharpness, none.
However a 80-200 with 2x converter still only gives 400f5.6 and a VR lens will give you the same but with VR and 3 extra stops and a smaller lens/size. Ouch!

This is the picture taken by Bill Silliker Jr to demonstrate, in his review of the VR, that indeed it is fast enough and that sharp panning pictures are feasible. Although scanned in a rush and magnified 4 times ...
